Quarter Window Cleaning

I decided to try cleaning and greasing my rear quarter window, because they were slower than molasses. I pulled one of them out and now I a bit lost as to where to start. Since the unit is no longer in the car and the window had to be down to get it out of the car, most of the rails and guides are behind the glass. Do I need to take this thing apart or should I just try and rig something up to get the window up out of the car? Maybe taking it apart will get me a better cleaning and grease job?

2 options:

Hook up power to the motor and get it to raise the window back "up" - careful to support the motor and glass for this. Or:

Manually spin the motor until the hole in the big gear lines up with the 3rd screw of the gear box (do you have old or later style motors there?) which will allow you to take it off and allow the glass to travel freely. Caution: this is under tension from the spring so when you remove the gearbox be prepared to slowly let it release it's tension.

Careful also to not let the glass twist away from the mounting bolts thus breaking - pay attention and take great care at all times of this process.

Pop the back of the gearbox off (if you have this type - I am not familiar with later style) and clean out old grease and pack new axle grease in there and recover.

Clean and grease the gear and tracks, and reinstall is the reverse of the above

Yank the motor. The glass should be free to move then. Take the two bolts off and glass. Newer BMWs are accessed through the track holes for the glass.

Amp the motor.
Clean the switches- too many lattes? You might be amazed....drop in volts.
Clean, relube, etc.

If they're anything like a big 6, the backs don't have spring assist compensators. The fronts do. Show the other side. if that's the case... they are slow as molassas by design. Clean the switches....

Like Steve, I have the sardine cans, except one window.

How do you yank the motor? The bolts are behind the glass. Or how do you manually spin the motor?

Has anyone removed the metal plate with the screws that's part of the motor. I was going to remove it to see what was in there? I'm assuming there is a gear in there but do not want to remove it and be surprised by something spring loaded in there that I can not get back to gether easily.

I decided the best way to do this and not get into too much trouble was to rig something up to hook up the motor to the car battery. I just uses a zip cord and attached the window motor to the power and switch for the rear window. Worked great. Got the window up to get access to the glides and rails for cleaning. Can someone tell me now what would be a good lub to use on these?

Clean everything up. Used the Mobil 1 and it's smoooooth. Have not done the speed test but it's definately faster. Will do the other over the weekend and then will tackle the fronts. Thanks
