Question about Motorsport Roundels

Greetings from e46 land!

I am an owner of an e46 M3, and have been looking to do something unique and somewhat different.

I have been a fan of the Motorsport roundels that adorns a few of the e9 cars. I was thinking that putting this roundel on an e46 M3 would be pretty unique as well as somewhat appropriate. That being said after searching on the net I have ended up with a few questions about this unique mark. I'm sure some purists would argue that it is not period correct but it a mark of the M division.

1. Which cars actually carried these roundels? As far as I know these cars are not considered M cars, or even silent M cars like the 850 was.

2.What size are these roundels in mm, would it be possible to get a similar size to what is needed on the trunk and hood of an e46.

3.Where can these badges be sourced? I have not been able to find these anywhere.

I thank you for you time, and If I have crossed any boundaries by wanting to place this badge on a new car I apologize. I am a huge fan of your cars and being around so many of them at Cars and Coffee the other day was a huge joy.

Please don't do that.

Howdy and welcome,

I have seen various styles of roundels available on Ebay. Not sure what size you need.

I think the Motorsport roundels you mention were custom made by the owners or previous owners of those cars.

You might try to source someone online or try Hemming's to get something custom made. I have seen ads in Hemming's offering services for recreating badges for all types of makes.

It is your car, enjoy it and celebrate its heritage if you like.

Don't let the purist ;) get you down. Slather rattlecan flames down the side of the thing if you want.

BMW Motorsport was created in the making of the CSL and its subsequent racing development. The roundel you're talking about didn't appear until the mid-seventies. I've never seen one on a factory E9 - for road or track. I think they first showed up with the Motorsport E21 turbo factory track cars, but I could be wrong...

Anyway, the roundels you've seen (Paul Cain's coupe, I'll bet) are one-offs most likely based on motorcycle repros, which can be had here. You'll need to fabricate a back plate to mount them, since they're only 70mm in diameter.

Here's a guy who is selling stickers that fit standard roundel sizes. I got a couple for grins and they look ok from 10 feet for the price. Party favors, really.

The short story is that there's nothing bolt-up available.
