I've got a newer shift lever with a slotted mount for the shift knob as opposed to threads like the old lever. I 've set it in place and like how it reduces throw. Unlike the old lever, it appears that the upper portion of the lever is not meant to be removed. As a result, I can find no way to get the upper bushing, spring, and circlip on for the ball. It looks like the later levers are supposed to use a single bushing that the ball snaps into, like this:

Will this bushing fit into the 265 shift platform? If not, what are others doing? There must be other 5-speed owners who have used Z3 shifters and run into the same problem.

I tried the Z3 shifter, but ran into similar problems. I ended up switching to a UUC shifter, as that does work with the stock carrier.

Now that I think about it, the shifter included a cup of sorts that functioned as an adapter between the nylon cup shifters and the metal ball shifters. I should still have it. The problem with it, as I recall, was that it didn't fit in the 265 carrier because it was meant to be used with later transmissions. Rob at UUC may be able to whip one up for you that would fit your application.
