Question for everyone... DIY's?

There is lots of content on YouTube that could provide a base but I imagine @Markos has bigger fish to fry than organizing content that already exist if searched for. I mean, we DO want to see him finish his coupe, don't we? ;-)

It may be a better use of his time to give everyone a class on how to search on the web...

I bet a lot of DeQ's posts can be in that new section.
I agree that they can be, but the question is how they will get there. We went through a version of this problem when Photobucket started charging for picture hosting. DQ had tons of very useful pictures in his DIY posts, but as I understand it, the mechanism to get the pictures released from Photobucket so that the threads could be preserved was for DQ to pay for the privilige of allowing us to review his pictures. Needless to say, the economics didn't work out on this (for DQ), and accordingly many of his old threads have Photobucket crap obscuring the pictures.

In this situation, we have a similar problem. For people who have only posted a few DIY threads, it may not be too much of a burden to move or link them to the new section of the forum. For DQ, however, it would be a big undertaking to go through the forums and move or link to all the DIY threads he has posted. He's already taken the time to puase work, take pictures and then after completion of the work go back and write up what he was doing and create a thread with both the written descriptions and the pictures. (Now, obviously, this helps document the work he has done on his car for future reference, but that's beyond the point.)

Indeed, the proposal that authors volunteer to move their stuff is likely to place a very heavy burden on those who have already taken the time to photograph and post their work (which itself is no small thing; I don't do it because of the time specifically dealing with the photographs). Add to this the fact that we may well have very good DIY threads by folks who no longer own coupes or are not very active on the forum. (Rob Siegel's excellent thread on the heater core bypass comes to mind.)

And so, I have a suggestion. Could we create a mechanism that allows members to nominate threads that they have found useful. This could be moderated in the same manner as the e28 stuff is moderated to ensure quality. Admins could, if they approve, either move the threads or put the links in the DIY section. My suggestion relieves the original thread author of any need to populate the new section with old threads, but leaves open the possibility that they could do so if they would like. And it solves the problem with people who posted good stuff, who are no longer active on the forum. And those of us who would like to see the new DIY section thrive could volunteer some time to find and reference threads we have used in the past.

The task of moving existing threads to the DIY section would be done by me, all I need to know is which ones to move. One way would be for anyone to post a new thread in the DIY section with the URL (link) to the existing thread. I'll see this and move the thread when I can. Another way to handle it is with your suggestion of "nominating" a thread, which is simply tagging the thread "DIY". I (or anyone) could then search tags with "DIY" and a list of threads would display that have that tag. I'd see those and move them to the DIY forum.

This is a great idea and will be a lot of work. One topic I have search numerous times is AC conversion to the Sanden of which I am currently completing. I wish this was available a couple years ago as it would have probably prevented some of my errors along the way. Thx, Dan

So you're saying you'll have an AC Conversion DIY added soon. That awesome! ;)

Outstanding. This is going to be a very nice contribution to the forum.

I would be stealing info from all the other great posts! Rob Siegal already has one that is a DIY that can be used. This along with Layne's bracket and info from pickman, stevehose, HBChris, SFDon (Aux Fan diode and switch) and others there is a great DIY. Sorry if I missed anyone. What I would add is minimal.

I'm guessing no one cares if you organize info and make a DIY, and giving credit where it's due. You could create a DIY and reference sources and even add links to those sources. It's all good. I've spent hour and hours making graphics in the past and then later find them used all over the internet with no reference to their source. But in their defense, you never really know who the original source is when it comes to the internet.

I will take a stab at it in my spare time.

Hey Dang - I posted a couple of items in the DIY section. Is this the way you want these done, or is there something I could do differently that would be preferable?

Do I understand correctly that this moves or copies an entire thread to the DIY section?

Is there a way to create a DIY thread in which one would instance a selection of individual posts from an existing thread?

For example, @HB Chris posted a number of posts about putting his coupe back together after paint in the "What did you do today" thread. But it takes forever to find each one in the sea of other posts. Even if you do a search by Author in that humongous thread you end up with a boatload of Chris' posts. It would be nice to have them instanced or referenced in a dedicated DIY thread. The reason I say "instanced" is because we don't want to remove them out of their current locations.

Maybe, it's already here and I missed it... But, if not, is that possible?

@Bmachine,

I can turn individual or multiple posts into a thread, while retaining the original post. If there is a strong use case for copying/moving content I can take care of it.

Hmmm. Thanks Mark for the offer. But I don’t want to put even more work on your plate. I was just wondering if there was a way for a user to do this semi-easily in the context of this DYI forum.
