I have the opportunity to get a pretty good deal on a getrag 265 out of a 77 euro 6 series.
would this work?
does this have the mechanical speedo?
is this the close ratio version?(euro)

as always thanks for the input and advice.

CR and 3.07

I think that all E24s had the CR box with a 3.07 final drive. The 3.5L cars sold in Europe did at any rate. Might have been different diffs for the US market.

That lines up with what I have seen, as well. However, both the 265 CR and OD have the mechanical drive we need.

The issue is the diff. There is a gear in the speedo that compensates for the diff ratio, so if you keep the original diff, the speedo will be accurate with either transmission.

Tranny I received when the car was purchased

Thanks for the help and information.
I did get an extra transmission with the car. He told me it was a 4spd.
I want to confirm this information.
The markings on the transmission are as follows.
262.0.200.00 R
Then at another location there is the number 225.
It has a detachable bell housing.

Can someone help me identify this transmission?
As always thanks for the help.

the OD and CR 265 look very similar from the outside.
Both have 262 in the casting.
The location of the reverse switch is the biggest indicator of which is which from the outside.

There is a website that shows this (I found before) but I can't find it now.

more info

will these pictures help answer exactly what transmission i have.
Based on the 262 identification it sounds like this is definitely a 5.spd.
is there any chance this is a 4 spd?

both the 265/5 (CR) and 265/6 (OD) have a 262 in the front case.
If I remember right the 4 speed was a 262 and used the same case.
The five speeds have a center section added for the extra gears.

Attached is a picture of my 265/5 (CR) on the floor in my garage with me pointing at the reverse switch. The 265/6 over drive has the switch in a different hole... don't remember which one. Other than that they look very much the same from the outside.

Both transmissions were available on the euro 6 series, the close ratio was the "Sport" transmission. It is possible, but just because it is a euro 6 series does not mean it had a "sport" transmission. I had one euro 635csi with the CR and one with the OD and both had the same LS 3.07:1 rear diff.

If you have the vin from the car you can get a copy of the options it had as delivered ... that is another way to find out... unless the transmission was swapped.

Thanks Wayne!

Was not the news I wanted to hear but at least I now know.

My situation is this;
My 3.0CS was originally an Automatic.
It was converted to a 4spd some years back.
When I bought the car it was sold to me with an extra transmission.
Although I was told by him it was a 4 speed, I was hoping the information was wrong.

Based on your feedback I was able to confrim that infact it is a 4spd.
(Does not have the extra piece for the added gears)

Oh well! I will continue to look for a 5spd.

Hi,
The 4-speed has a two-piece housing, the 5-speed a three piece housing. A 77' car would have had a 4-speed as BMW didn't yet provide any 5-speed gearboxes for the six cylinder cars at that time. The 5-speed came later.
Best regards
A
