did the E9 racers use rack and pinion steering at any time? if so does anyone have any details, pictures or know if they used stock BMW parts to achieve this. I have heard from an E9 race car owner that they did holmologate a system
The factory built car did use a rack and pinion, the #25 and it's sister cars are set up with this.
I doubt that the rack is from some other BMW application . . as the race cars were built in 1973-74 . . and there wasn't any BMW with a rack in production at that time . . .
I dont know the details but I do know of one e9 racer here in the bayarea that is fitted with a rack and pinion. It runs in the historics as well so I'm guessing that it is all correct for the period.
Iv'e put a rack in my coupe track car and it was a pita The coupes have a rear- steer setup (the tie rods connect in the rear of the front struts)not many cars have this setup, the rack also ends up very close to the fire wall so the angle of the steering shaft is more extreme than most and to find a rack that pivots exactly the same distance the front control arms due is also difficult.
If I had to do it again I would have a custom rack made by woodward steering $$$ or try to fit in a aluminium steering box from howe or one of the off road guys which also have a selection of ratios if you want quicker steering you could buy a 1-1/2 box and install it in your steering shaft (common on 2002s) or on some of the csl factory race cars they cut the spindle steering arms in half to quicken the ratio ....hope this helps good luck
