What is the story on which is the correct Radiator Overflow Tank for the E9s?

My very late 1974 has plastic but so does my 1972 CSi... But my 1970 2800CS and my 1972 3.0CS have brass?

I think 73's started getting the plastic, my 72 has brass and my old 73 had plastic. Your 72csi was probably replaced by a PO.

Does anyone have an opinion on which is better?

With plastic you can obviously see inside it.

Brass won't melt too easily.

No difference, it all comes down to originality. The brass were NLA after being replaced by the plastic version.

Brass on my '74, CS built 11/73. Brass is easy to repair with solder if it leaks.

The advantage

of plastic is it's opaque. One can clearly see flow and level which is an advantage.

But.... brass is original for some.. and you can never go wrong by keeping what was with a little care and maintenance.

I am not questioning which is best...

I do not doubt that the brass is probably the better tank... But I was asking which was original... It seems like brass all the way up to production 5/74 but my 1974 is actually a 12/74 production date sold in May 1975...

That car has a plastic tank and it might be correct?

Mine is a 6/72 and by the time I got it, there was a plastic tank. I picked up a used brass tank a few years back for when I want to replace it.

The brass ones had trouble with the solder getting fatigued after many heat cycles. I have a brand new plastic one for sale if anyone is interested, $75....

Source for overflow tank?

My new-to-me '72 CS has been badly hacked, and is missing the overflow tank all together. Can i ask someone to point me towards either a new after market souce, or reputable used part vendor? A look on ebay came up empty.
Thanks, Tom
Massachusetts.

Still listed at Penskeparts:

15 17111114790 EXPANSION TANK (12/68 to 11/75)0.97 1 $78.59
They come up on ebay from time to time

My brass is painted black. How easy is it to strip to brass. I have seen chrome caps, are they original, available? I like the look of the chrome on brass.
