The weather here is way too cold to get out and work on the Bavaria so instead of making donations to the skin gods and dusting off my profanity skills I sit around and think about all that needs to be worked on and things that may need to be worked on. One of those real things is the steering. The po has obviously made some mods to the car including a new aluminum radiator, electric fan, and what i believe to be power steering delete.

This appears to be a bare bones cars i.e. slick top, no air conditioning and of course no indication of power steering. A cursory look at the steering box doesn't reveal any plugged power steering in/out holes for hydraulic hoses. I know those big, bus size steering wheels were put on for a reason and one is to reduce the effort to steer these cars around sharp turns, parking lots etc. Personally I really dislike the size of the steering wheel as it looks like and afterthought for an otherwise beautiful car. To me it looks like it belongs in a big truck or yes, in a bus. All that aside, were any of these cars built without power steering or is this another po delete that i'll need to address to make this car easier to live with?
 
Left a PM. Meant to add, buy a propane tank heater. I have been using them for years in my uninsulated garage here in Bucks County, PA.
 
Does your VIN match a Bavaria (USA) with power steering or a 2500 without
Of course you could have a CSL quick-ratio steering box :)
 
I cannot find a good vin decoder but the car is titled 1972 the title matches the vin and the vin matches the stamping on the engine block. it could have a QR box Ill check the numbers
 
Thanks, at least it verifies the car is a 3.0s bavaria built between 7/71 and 7/73 and this one is titled 1972.

Is there a way to further narrow the build date without contacting BMW?
Say, the RHD 3.0S auto production spans two years and 2113 units. Saw one here are while back that sits around car 600, so I'm assuming late 71, early 72.
 
Not sure there is because the data in the vin decoder only gives the vin numbers and the range of years that include the build. While we're here, has anyone seen a bavaria with steering wheel horn button/pad with crosshair. perhaps this may help narrow down the build date. I've done an extensive search and cant find this steering wheel with cross hair horn pad.

reviewing the vin decoder provided by WES and making some really broad assumptions it appears the E3 I have may have been built early 1972.
 
Can you tell if your Bavaria was manufactured for delivery in the US or elsewhere? My guess is that most cars sent to US dealers were built with A/C and power steering. The fact that your's lacks A/C suggests that it might have been made without power steering as well. I wouldn't think that finding a used power steering set-up for an e9 or e3 would be all that hard.

e3 & e9 power steering works pretty well. You can certainly downsize the steering wheel diameter once you have PS. But I wouldn't try it with manual steering.

I believe all Bavarias were manufactured for delivery in North America. This was an E3 model developed by BMW and Hoffman specifically for North America. If the SN starts 310 (4 speed) or 313 (auto) it is a 72-73 MY Bavaria. I have never seen or heard of a Bavaria not equipped with AC and PS (there are always exceptions, however and this car may be one). I have seen a few sunroof cars.
 
during my research to figure out this car, i came across info somewhere indicating there were some basic level e3's (believe they were referred to as strippers) built without air, ps, sunroof. My first bmw, a bavaria did have ps air and a sunroof. any ideas on the steering wheel? I've not seen one with the crosshair center pad.
 
RE: the steering wheel crosshair, I bleive the bmw crosshair may be a dealer add on, or something a po may have purchased from aftermarket

I would say that it is not something from BMW. Since 1971 I've never seen something similar and definitely not something with a BMW part number.
 
I agree, but I sort of like it although the crosshair wasnt used in the bavaria but in 2002's in 1974 so it's doubly out of place
 
At the risk of repeating myself for those who already know about this. As Dick says above, BMW, at Max Hoffman's urging, built the Bavaria exclusively for the American market. The Deutsch Mark was strong at that time and BMW was having trouble competing price wise. Hence the Bavaria that could be advertised at less than $5.000. Well, a dollar less at $4.999. boldly proclaimed in the print ads of the day. Of course Max being Max, i.e. air sucked into the carbs was a mandatory option, most Bavarias stickered out around $7.-8,000 and beyond.

But what fascinates me the most is that the Bavaria is the ONLY model BMW ever labeled with a name.
 
Isetta's 0-31 mph is over 30 seconds! Designed and first manufactured in Italy it was licensed all over Europe. Slapping a Roundel on an Italian car does not make it any more German than slapping it on a Yugo. Italian to its core.

A Black Hawk helicopter pilot described driving an Isetta is like piloting a helicopter.
