Has anyone had good success dyeing a used steering wheel ? I did one leather wheel with crack filler, then black dye and then the recommended clear. It looked great when done but always had a sticky feeling --- yuk. Any suggestions on correct procedure or product brands will be much appreciated. Thanks ~ John Buchtenkirch

John,

I re-dyed a leather LeCarra wheel grey to match the interior of my old Bronco. It looked/felt great and lasted for years. It came in a spay can and was very easy to apply. I picked it up locally at an upholstery supply store. World Upholstery probably has something similar.

Make sure the wheel is actually leather...

Check carefully! Some BMW wheels look exactly like leather and even have stitching but they are rubber (AKA Simulated leather)...

That might have been the problem with your other wheel...

The wheel I had was definitely leather, it was an early 7 series wheel. When I wet sanded the crack filler I sanded thru the black color in spots and you could see the leather starting to show. I think I followed the directions correctly so I’m hoping to locate a better product that hopefully gives better results however leather isn't my thing, I have very little experience with it. ~ John Buchtenkirch
