Trying to mount early bumpers to my 74. What is the clearance (gap) between the inside edge of the rear bumper and the outside of the body of the car?

I think you'll need to specify which year rear bumper you have. There are two different style mounting brackets.

when i did this swap, i just adjusted till the bumper and the rubber gasket (be sure you use this - new part still avail) were just touching the body.

I would use my little pinky as a gauge, it should be close. The end cap rubber needs to touch the body on each quarter panel.

I got new rubber for the end tips both the front and rear bumpers. Is there anything that goes between the body and bumper bracket you bolt to? Rubber Base or ?

kys,
i dont think originally there was anything between the bumper mount and the body, but i added some rubber washers (lowes), seemed like a good idea. also, be sure you have a buddy over when you install the bumpers, easy to scratch the paint if solo.
not sure what your plan is for bodywork, but make sure you plug all the holes, especially the ones from that nasty skirt piece on the rear that is attached in about 20 places. until i repaint my car i got some black plastic plugs (lowes again) and rtv'd them in place - looks ok for now and def waterproof. pic below.
happy to help with more specifics if you need, pm me if so.
best,
alanmcg

OK I'm into this now. Rear Bumper first. It seems to be very slow but I want it right. With the two pieces of the bumper together and fitting it to the body, I noticed that the bumper has a very slight bow up in the middle. I looked very carefully to see if it has possibly been bumped and bent but it does not look like it. Is the bumper suppose to have the slight bow or should it be flat. If flat is there something that needs to be adjusted with the three carriage bolts.
