rear main / crankshaft seal depth?

I installed the new seal in the housing, but only to the point that the seal flange is even with the housing (sorry no pic's). The blue book indicates that, when replacing the seal, it should be 1-2mm below the edge of the flange and the auto-book manual (below) indicates that the seal should be driven all the way into the flange.

What are your recommendations or what have you done re. seal depth?

Did you polish the crank hub? What kind of condition is the hub in. Can’t hurt to go a mm or 2 deeper.
 
the crankshaft was polished at the machine shop, but will check the surface that the seal rides on, not sure if they did that...
