Hi guys (and gals?)

It's my opinion my injected coupe sounds positively anemic with the multiple resonators and mufflers of the factory exhaust. Coming from the air-cooled 911 world where the exact, ripping exhaust note is pursued with a fanaticism bordering on insanity, this meager effluence has me thinking about taking the "Holy or holey " rearmost muffler out of the equation. It's got a few pin-holes..

So the question is:

Has anyone deleted that rearmost muffler from the equation?

What was the outcome?

Currently the car is running what appears to be a Stahl 1.5" header to the stock csl/csi system.

Love to hear the answers to this. My 964 briefly had the muffler removed for work done, and it was music to my ears. VERY loud but sounded amazing. If it were up to me and I guess it is, sort of as I think there are noise restrictions in most towns, I'd take the muffler off my 911, and BMW if it would sound similarly as good.

My car has a stainless 2.5 exhaust, tubular headers, and has 1 tiny resonator. Will be starting it up for the first time this Saturday, it’s going to sound like a fighter plane. I would definitely remove at least the muffler.

With a 5.0 515hp at the crank I'm running 2.5" 304 SS with a zillion pie-cutted and tig welded mandrel bends wrapped in hi-temp exhaust wrap with 2.5 " CAR CHEMISTRY inserts free flow baffels-sounds like a GT40 - With the big six I ran before did the same w no resonator or muffler and gave it a lower frequency rumble- tuned it with inserts for back pressure.
This build is a far cry from an OEM purist aspect - owned since 74' with many "tractor" motors under the hood - dare to be tweaked and and a tad different.

I think any car that is run on the street needs a muffler that does not assault the senses of those that have to hear it in their cars or homes. The number of Mustang GTs and Dodge Chargers/Hellcats that we can hear inside our home is incredible, same with Harleys with straight pipes. Noise laws are not enforced, I subscribe to the thinking that my rights stop where your rights begin. Others may disagree.

My coupe had the missing small can that Steve removed and I added it back to my system. With the b35 and mild cam the exhaust sound is very nice.

To my thinking you'd have to do a whole lot of removing to ever get a coupe to the annoying level of those Hellcats and pimped out mustangs, but do recognize everyones tolerance levels are different. It's a sports car so I do like to hear the engine and its barely audible in my system.

@Stevehose - Thanks for the pic. I thought the center "thing" was a resonator as opposed to a muffler?

I agree totally.

I don't know what is actually called, when I had it cut out it hit the floor of the muffler shop with the thud of a rust-filled boat anchor. My exhaust is not loud at all, just a little more throaty than stock. Not loud on the highway, sounds great at low speed around town and reverberating against the buildings of the French Quarter. Actually, I would like it a little louder but thus far I am restraining myself :p

When I bought my Bavaria it was in the process of becoming a hot rod. It had this newly fabricated muffler shop exhaust system on it...

I'm far from a purist and own two hot rods with (semi) loud exhausts systems, but a Bavaria (and maybe a CS?) is a stately car that deserves an exhaust note in keeping with its stature (IMO). Peter at KK found me a complete NOS system. Perfect (for me)!

Exhaust technology has come far enough to have both worlds at the flip of a switch. Want it loud at 6am to wake up the neighbors irritating dog? Flip the switch to fun mode!
I've not searched for this in the aftermarket world but it certainly exists in modern stuff.
