Any ideas on how to get the chrome strip and gasket off the edge of the back side windows? I gave it a few light taps with hammer and punch, but it doesnt move.

remove the screw first

First remove the screw at the front (where it meets the door) then lift it up from that end.

I'm trying to remove the chrome U-channel and rubber gasket that run vertically up the leading edge of the quarter window.

if that is the part in which you are interested in is far more simple

the alu profile + rubber are joined together by the shape of the rubber , and this set is joined to the glass only by the pressure of the rubber

this means that if noone has changed anything in the unknown past of your car, (i.e. adding glue or adhesives), you should dissasemble easily

you can spray light oil through the rubber with the small tube that some spraying bottles provide, that way perhaps it will come loose easily,

yes, no tool is needed, please do not use a hammer or scredriver, the glass may broke or be dented

I changed mine´s some 8 months ago, take care when you reassemble the new rubber soak it with silicone spray otherwise it will be almost impossible to introduce it in the alu profile

and then, before installing them again onto the window clean the excess of silicone from the "u" part of the rubber that will grasp the glass

regards
