I have a 72 CS that is going through a complete, mechanical restoration. In the process, we found the rear shock towers were not corroded, but had stress cracks on the top of the shock towers. They have since been repaired but I was wondering if this "structural failure" is normal or not. They are definitely strong now.

It's a well documented design flaw of these cars. If they're now welded and repaired you're good to go.

Continuing on rear shock towers, what additional work would be required to support rear coil-overs? Just much heavier versions of the small "tower" itself with a bar between the left and right side? What about the wheel arch itself assuming good condition of structure and metal?
