Rear towing bracket

Can anyone provide me with guidance as to how the rear towing bracket was fixed? I recall that it was positioned immediately to the left of the spare wheel floor panel and projected rearwards so that the entire "eye" ended up clear of the rear valence but how was it fixed? Was it bolted (how many? not listed), spot welded? (how many times?)or maybe special rivets? Anybody know? Any help gratefully received. John
 
I have a tow bracket, used for the extra dragging boot...I did not get that. The German PO used it to tow his 5.05 sailboat. I'll have to look when I get a chance, IIRC bolts in three places.

you mean this towing eye? or an actual tow hitch for a ball.
 
Thanks and, yes, I mean the towing bracket as shown in your pic (not the ball-hitch). My recollection is that the original location is to the left of the central strengthening rib shown on your photo (in other words not to the right as fixed in your photo) but my concern is how was it fixed in place (whatever) by Karmann? Yes, just 4-6 spot welds. The question is, why are you reinstalling it? It is a flimsy setup to begin with and I would not actually want to use it to say, pull the car out of ditch.

especially with some of the rusty spare tire wells on coupes. pulling something with little rolling resistance is one thing ...
 
I would leave it off . . . god forbid someone would accidentally try to use it in the future!

When i got my car the tow hook was missing, the spare tire tub ripped, and the rear valence bent several inches outward from a misguided tow. My assumption is that when the tow hook cut loose whatever was hooked to it managed to grab the lip of the rear valence as it sling-shotted past. Had to fabricate a whole new rear valence as a result!

That damage pales in comparison to the homeowner that saw the loose speedboat roll backwards into his living room...
 
NO way

Too much potential for damage. There’s always the chance the pull could rip apart a 40 year old and possibly rust weakened spare tire well or the car your trying to flat tow runs into you because he doesn’t hit his brakes quick enough. Pay the macho kid with the truck $20 to do the pull……. believe me you will be way ahead. ~ John Buchtenkirch
