if your mirror had black marks like mine did after sitting for a while
you can replace it with the 635
or such on ebay
the mirrors are the same and just pop out of the holder also the ball is held in with a screw
coool so you can remove it sand w/ some 400 grit
and then polish it comes back w a nice brushed finish
looks new again

i know the e30 m3 has the reading lights too. not sure about the standard e30 mirror ... but i would imagine that the late 325i or 325iC did.

yea for two hunfred dollars
i can get one that dims automaticallly
but the want the oem look
and i have the rechargable one in the pocket

I had an OE one modified to have the three 'Homelink' garage door opener buttons on the bottom of the mirror. Works wonderfully, and I 'hate' those opener boxes attached to sunvisors, or any other place on the dash.

i haven't gone that far to think about homelink ... but i hate the garage door opener boxes too. oh, well ... something else to figure out. i just don't want to remove the mirror and try to get it back in - major PITA to get back in.

Not that it matters for any respectable e9 owne, but I have one gripe with most homelink openers. They aren't powered by ignition power, so you can open the door with car off. Meaning, someone car get into your garage by breaking into your car.

My garage is filled with an e9 and a minivan, so my commuter is parked in the driveway. I don't keep an opener in the car. Instead, I can open my garage from my phone (from anywhere). It also sends my phone push notifications when the doors open.

As far as mirrors go, you can also spend ~$200 on a mirror that has bluetooth audio, a memory card reader, traffic cam, and backup camera. Too high tech for my car however.

Ah Mark, If you have one associated with the mirror, you CAN power it from a 'switch on' (running or accessories) source. I think the conversion cost about $60 as I recall. The mirror also has self dimming and a compass. The connection option makes it secure unless someone has a key to the car or hotwires it.

And, at my four score age, I only have the phone to make somewhat emergency calls, it is not my constant companion, so that approach doesn't work very well for me. Neat for those who use it, however.

Mark, my 911 has a homelink ... it sleeps outside because the coupe sleeps inside. the homelink does NOT work without the key on. i know because i have shut the car off before i opened the door ... had to put the key in and open it ... and yes, i tried before i put the key in.

I guess it depends on the manufacturer. Of course if you wired it yourself you have the option. My minivan and the Subaru have constant power to the openers.

Kudos to you for prioritizing the coupe over the 911!!!

if truth be told ... i get 1/2 of the garage ... the wife gets the other half for her audi SUV. if i was prioritizing, the audi would sleep outside ... but everyone here knows how well that would go over and what that would mean. so, the 911 sleeps unprotected.

That's primarily because the 911 will still be there after 6 months outside whereas the coupe would be a pile of Fe203...

I've pulled my CS mirror on and off though not lately. I have an E12 mirror now, it's bigger and gives better situational awareness.

They can be difficult to spring in and out. I found that making sure the spring loaded ball in the mirror mound actually slides back and forth like it's supposed to, will be a help. Some lubricant, work the ball so it slides easily, left hand holds it in place, heel of right hand gives it an authoritative bump, in in she goes.

Don't ask what happened with my 735i whose mirror fell off, and I tried the same trick to reinstall.... they don't use that mechanism but rather a twist. Effed the windshield, it was the last straw for that car, and good riddance, nothing but trouble.
