The outer window squeege rubber on the drivers side rear window has started to fall apart and I'm looking at my replacement options

Option 1
Order the original BMW part, and reuse the factory felt lining , part 3 in this diagram

Option 2
Switch to the coupeking part that replaces the rubber and inner felt

Has any one tried this part?

Option 3
Give up because Chris will always have more restored parts on his car than I have on mine :)

Kurt,

I couldnt stop from laughing! You have a beautiful coupe, no need to give up, it's just the little things. I bought generic window felt and cut it so it would bend and pop riveted it to the chrome trim with the new BMW seal. Hope to see you in Carmel.

what was the material thickness you used? Was there any of the original part that wasn't worn or compressed that you were guided in selecting new? Was the material wool or synthetic? I know synthetic material is available and perhaps there might be less potential for corrosion.

With rivets, etc. one concern is that the felt protrudes a bit ( but presumably not to far) and nothing gets scratched which was the original purpose I assume.

hi, assuming that you refer to the felt part, the original old part was corrroded and thus it had some irregular areas, i can not use any part of it

i used what it seemed to be a synthetic material that is covering and wrapping an aluminium plate, i assume that no corrosion will happen

the alu plate is 1mm thick and 18mm wide, the area that has to contact the window has a protuberence of 4mm, that is bigger than any rivet head that you would use, so there is no risk of scratching the glass

as about the purpose i assume that is not only avoid the scratching of the glass, but to avoid also the rubber to get trapped by the down moving glass, the felt protuberance improves the slipping of the glass when it moves down

Use the Coupeking part. It works beautifully and as a member of the community you should support the entrepreneurial efforts of those that take the risk to create/make parts that are NLA.

I installed these on my car and they work beautifully, probably better than the original two piece solution ever did.

Thanks TJ,
I now remember helping you install that part.

After some research I found a generic belt weatherstrip that I was able to use as a replacement part along with the factory rubber squeegee part. The provider is Restoration specialties part number YM30

http://stores.restorationspecialties.com/-strse-51/YM30-72"/Detail.bok

It has a stainless bead vs the factory fabric bead but once installed it's not visible. It is pretty cheap at $20 but comes in 72" lengths so the shipping was equal to the part. If I were to do it again I'd ask them to cut it in half and hopefully reduce the shipping cost. It is very close to the size of the factory part and is flexible allowing me to create the curve without cutting

The attached pictures show the profile of the part and the bent piece compared to the factory part.

To install I remove the old parts and sent the metal part off to be rechromed. Here's how I reassembled

- Attach the rubber strip to the chrome molding so the lip just overlaps the edge of the molding (I used wurth rubber glue)
- Bend the belt weatherstrip to shape test fitting as required. I used binder clips to hold in place to see how it forces the rubber against the molding
- Once happy with the shape use binder clips to secure the weatherstripping in place, I used about 7 clips
- Using a right angle awl poke a hole in the belt weather stripping from the inside
- enlarge the hole with the same or similar tool and rivet the part in place
- Repeat for the remainder of the mounting holes

Some additional pictures showing the part riveted in place and how it looks from the top and on the car.
