Updated to add pics of my engine, cylinder head and getrag 5sp c/r

Looking for a reputable shop or mechanic to swap out my 3.0 liter engine and automatic transmission in my 73 CS and replace with my euro 3.5 ltr engine & Getrag c/r 265. (From a 1985 535i). I am located in the DMV and I would like for shop or garage to be in the area. Please feel free to leave names or DM me. I am looking to tackle this long overdue project this winter.

Thank you.

Antar, you have lost me at DMV ... i always associate that with department of motor vehicles. your signature says DC, so i presume that's where you are. while i don't know anybody in Virginia, the closest coupe source is Korman in Greensboro, NC ... but that isn't necessarily close ...

you should check BIMRS.ORG for recommended service providers in the area. they show 4 providers = 2 from Alexandria, VA ... 1 in Rockville MD and 1 in Annapolis, MD

The National Capital Region portion of the Washington Metropolitan Area is also colloquially known by the acronym "DMV" which stands for the "District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia."

Where is the DMV? Your location information says you are in DC; if that is correct you could try RRT out near Dulles Airport, London Foreign Service on Lee Highway in Falls Church, VA, or BMW Excluservice in Rockville, MD.

Thanks Mike, clearly, I have lived out here in the DC /Maryland / Virginia area too long. Sometimes I wish I were back in Northern California. :)

There is a lot that I miss from No. California. The weather, the variety of great restaurants, amazing topography, great mountain roads (pavement is about as bad a PA though). I go back occasionally to visit my wife’s family and wow the traffic is so much worse in the 18 years since I left.

Road Race Technologies (RRT) is more of a race prep shop. They did a custom exhaust for my e39 and did some welding for my coupe. A bunch of the guys who work there are BMW nuts. They had an M1 in there when they did my e39 work.

London Foreign Service's primary thing is british cars, but they do a lot of BMW work and their BMW guy is very good.

I hear you.i love the Bay Area. Especially it’s parks & trails for hiking & running. Until recently , I would get out the east Bay several times a year to check on my Dad who lived out there. However, with winter & covid and him getting older and living alone, I moved him back east temporarily.

Thanks , I have also used London to service my coupe when I lived in Virginia. I am unfamiliar with Road Race Technologies but they sound like a great candidate to fine tune the rebuilt 3.5 liter engine :)

Good suggestions I still looking to switch to a m30b35 in my 73 coupe this winter and I have been considering swapping the Webbers for Motronics or Megasquirt. Now if I can only find a good but reasonable mechanic to work on my car. Is it reasonable to expect an engine swap for less than 6k?

1. mmm the second pic shows shiny intake stacks, but dirty U-shaped intake runners. Someone get tired of cleaning them?
2. '85 engine... won't that need adaptors for the mounts, and didn't that trans have an electronic speedo pickup? Neither of those being insurmountable obstacles.

ButwhatdoIknow - I'm just stuck out here in the middle of the pond. Fortunately there's no place I'd rather be.

Anyone wants to come over, pay close attention to the ever-changing rules for entry (Gary)!

Thanks Gary, I appreciate you taking a look. It’s been a while since I purchased this package from a fellow E9er who was going to drop it into his coupe. I will need to get a mount kit and other parts. I will have to check about the speedo, for some reason, I think the prior owner swapped out the electronic speedo for a manual speedo. But I could be wrong , it has been years :)
