I have a bit of a Franken-engine in my car -- a 3.2L from an 83 533i with the Motronics pulled off and L-Jetronic with Lamda and the dizzy and electronic ignition from an '81 528i installed. The First Fives site (and the 528i manual) say to time at 22 degrees BTDC at 2200 rpm with all the vacuum lines plugged. Does anyone else have this setup and use these specs?

Does anyone time to a total advance number instead?

Couple of thoughts for you..
It can help to set the engine
at TDC at the dampener 1st. Once
you are at TDC look in the bell
housing aperture and verify what
mark appears and apply a dab
of silver paint to it. Next rotate
crank by hand and look for more
marks- you may find 2 more marks
one at about 3 teeth and one at about
7 teeth. You may find only one at 7 teeth.
The mark at 3 is for 10 degrees at idle
and the one at 7 is for 22 degrees at
2200 rpm. I clean and paint all marks
and stick a note in the glovebox for the
future. The purpose of all this is to set
the timing correctly and not 22 or 10
Degrees off. It can also show the condition
Of your dizzy

Thanks Don. I set the timing using the TDC mark on the damper, an advance timing light, and 22 deg at 2200rpm, but the idle seems very fast, and I take my life in my hands putting my face that close to the fan to see the marks. I'll take your advice and measure and paint the flywheel.
