This thread was a big help. I replaced the starter with an SR441x and when I plugged in the battery I kept smelling my wires...
Not an expert, but I know enough to be dangerous and well...I was! I disconnected the battery and later reconnected briefly and noticed smoke coming from the ballast resistor. Looked up on the site and the title of "red hot ballast" fit the scenario.
Fixed now, thanks to those that figured this out first!
