Does anyone have any tips for getting the euro style bumper rubbers to go back on snugly ? I've fitted new mounting strips but the rubber seems to be out of shape and doesn't grip very well.

bumper rubbers

They MUST be warm and pliable to get them to spread over holding strips perhaps a bit of silicone lube to get the fingers on the rubber to slip into their correct position.

Hi, thanks for the response. I can get them on no problem, and will apply some gummi pflege anyway. But they are really out of shape, they don't close tightly around the bumper as I'd hoped, so there is in many places a gap of about 5mm. Maybe that's normal and I'm just expecting too much.

Are you talking about the over rider/bumperettes? Do you have the channeled welting that goes between them and the bumper?

Yes I have new mounting strips, which are riveted on like the originals which were totally rusted. One thing I noticed is that the originals seem to be slightly curled, in section, at top and bottom, if that makes sense. I may lay something long and flat on top of them for a few days to see if it helps.

Is the gap in the rubber to the chrome the same on the top and bottom of the strip. If the metal strip is not mounted on the bumper correctly (too high or too low) there will be a gap on the top or bottom.

Yes it is the same gap on the top and bottom. But I did make that mistake in a couple of places I will admit !

This whole job is much harder than it looks I've found, not having a proper workshop to do it in. I found it difficult to bend the strips around the corners well. Then I realised I should have put the strips on while the bumper was in one piece, as on reassembly I realised the two strips were at very slightly different heights. So I had to drill the rivets back out again, this after I'd slathered the whole lot in POR15.
