Team,

I have attached a picture of the 3 relays plus a plug front of engine bay LHS.

I am running a very basic car / engine electrically now, and am wondering about these elec circuits.

The only relay , that appears to be doing anything, is the front one for the high beams.

The others appear to be inactive, with the final plug unused.

Any idea what they were used for (air con? electric chokes on carbs? etc), I am considering removing them, as part of a broad wiring clean up.

Thanks again,

Mike

What year is your e9?

I don't know if the later cars were wired the same way, but my '70 2800 came with just two relays. There was a notch in the sheet metal for a third, but no socket/wiring/relay in that position. Many owners - myself included - add a third relay there and wire the low beams through it. So perhaps a PO began doing this on your car, but never completed the task. Are there wires going to that socket? Are any of them hot?

As Jay said, if a third one is there an owner may have used it for the lo beams, in 74 a lo beam relay was added but it is under the dash. Otherwise it was reserved for a fog light relay.

thanks so much guys, is a 73,,

so i have worked out high beam relay, horn relay, third one was unused as discussed, so i have used it as my thermo fan relay now... I think my low bean relay is under the dash,,

in terms of the plug,/socket,, i reckon this is the "loop in", for the original distributor / line running to the tachometer (maybe a testing port)?

Thanks for your help.

73 doesn’t have a lo beam relay, and yes the socket is for diagnosis and has an orange cap. It provides voltage, rpm, dwell and has a remote start feature without turning on ignition.

Yep, socket makes sense.. thanks Chris, very clear.. I will send the chat some pics once i get the airbox installed,, will be an alpina b2s tribute, but engine is bored and stroked, about 3.63 ltr..
