Hi all,

In the end, the oil seep on my trans is in between the middle section and the rear cover. It also leaks from a small round cover on the right top side of the rear cover.

Is it just a matter of removing the output flange, popping out the rear cover and reseal? I heared these trans are difficult to put back together with 7 items needing to line up etc. Does that involve the rear cover also?

Thanks!

Hi GGR,

Did you ever get an answer? or did you just muddle through?

If you did, what was the result?

Hi,

no, I never got an answer. I've been busy with other parts of the project but the trans will come back on top of the the list soon. If you get an answer/solution in the meantime, please let me know.

BMW Special tool 23 1 350

Good morning all. I am resurrecting this thread as I need to remove the rear cover off of a Getrag 265, to switch over to a mechanical speedo drive. I have one in currently, but am swapping the transmission. The instructions seem clear, but I have two concerns.

Will I actually need BMW Special tool 23 1 350? The other special tool seems to a be a basic puller, but this one looks more specialized. Anyone know if it is actually needed? if required, where can I get one?

Also, what should I use for seal between the two case parts upon reassembly, some number of Loctitie?

thanks for any help !

It's funny you would resurrect this thread now, because I'm currently going through the same process. I have a Getrag 265 in my car without speedo drive and I want to install one out of another Getrag 265 which is in need of a rebuild.

I started by removing the speedo drive from the latter. I took the flange out (didn't need a puller), then took the seal out. I then took the speedo cable drive on the side out which came in one piece. From there I inserted a screw driver in where the cable plugs in and I was able to push the speedo drive on the shaft up and grab it. I also got a washer that goes between the gear and the bearing.

I did not need any special tool, or puller, and I did not have to remove the back cover of the transmission. I was lucky though because I tried the same on a 4 speed and the gear on the shaft wouldn't budge.

I'm planning to insert the gear in my car the same way, without taking the back cover of the trans out. I have an issue though, that washer in between the gear and the bearing is only 1mm thick, when it's supposed to be 2,5mm. I looked in there and there was no second washer. I'm wondering if I should just put it in the way it came out or if I should look for a 2.5mm washer?

Thanks for the quick and helpful response, my newer transmission has the plug in place where the speedo cable will go, anyone know if this is easily removed?

Without the correct shim/washer your tranny won't work. The output flange may hit the case.
Part# 8 fixes that problem for 2 bucks:

Thanks sfdon.

Apparently the thickness of that shim should be 2.5 mm as specified here: http://hem.passagen.se/m2002tii/tech/tips/speedo_on_tranny/index.htm

The one I took out of the trans is only about 1mm and I didn't see a second one in there. I took that trans out of a 633 csi that was apparently working OK with that shim. The other issue if that shim is not correct is that the speedo gear may not be in the correct position relative to the speedo drive. I think I'm just going to order that shim together with the seal and be done with it.

Well, I could certainly use that tool to get the gear out of my 4 speed, as the 265 I got the gear out to will need one once it is rebuilt. Any idea where I can get that tool?

My understanding, from the e24 boards, is the internal gear for the speedo dr is already there and you just need the geared shaft that goes in from the outside and that the cable hooks to
