I am finishing up my '73 3.0 CS and have weber carbs. The manual for the period refers to Zeniths 35/40 carbs. Now I understand that the stock carbs were frequently changed out to webers because that were problematic. But, I need to be totally stock on this so my question is are the Zeniths the only carbs that BMW used at that period and does anyone have the correct period carbs for sale? Would appreciate your input. PeterT

Peter,
Zenith 35/40 INAT is the only carb BMW used. You can find them on eBay regularly. Rebuild kits are available, and properly built and set up Zeniths are head and shoulders above the Weber 32/36 in performance.

Cheers

Indeed. The Zeniths did all right, even if a 3.5 swap is done. The Webers don't compete unless triple 40s or dual 38s are used. The 32/36 just aren't enough up top.

yes and...

Those Zenith carbs were also used on some Mercedes of the 70s, but likely there were external differences such as linkage and what-have-you. Mention this cause I was looking under the hood of a nice 70s Benz 250 the other week, and recognized the carbs.

But members of this list probably have lots of old Zeniths floating around. Yes I have a pair but warped casting, you don't want this particular set. So watch for that - though I think you can only ascertain warp-ness by taking the carbs apart and laying them on a flat surface such as sheet of glass, etc.
