Thank you in advance for all of your help. I am a newbie to e9's and have been hunting for a very clean restored CS. I have found a red/black leather 73 cs 4spd with sunroof with a tom kelly rebuilt engine and very clean to excellent (not flawless) body. Please help, what is the right price range? The seller is asking 29K.

Oh Boy..Get ready for some conflicting opinions :?

<IMO>A CS or a CSi in the condition you had described should fetch a price of $20,000 to $25,000 and about $30,000 for a perfect and flawless car, although not necessarily concourse condition. The price for a similar condition CSL would be in the $40,000 to $55,000 range.

For reference, you may want to ask what other board members would take for coupes they've invested time and $$ in.

I'm probably biased, but I wouldn't let my ground up, restored 3.5 72CS, go for a penny less than the $45K I've been offered for it ...and thats before I add the SS exhaust.

Of course, who knows what would happen if: 1) I actually asked those potential buyers to put their $$ where their mouth is, or 2) I was in a $cash$ pinch, or 3) the classic car market atually starts to value these cars...

Can't comment on US/Canada prices as they are higher, it would seem, than the UK. $29K is about £14,500 which is very high for over here.

My only comment would be is to very carefully check the car over. A nice shiny example can hide a great number of sins!. If it was restored in the past is there any photgraphic evidence, if not is there some decent history bills, records etc which can indicate it's been looked after?

If you still really like this particular car try and get a second impartial opinion on it's condition. Even if you have to spend money to get that opinion (Automotive engineer/valuer) it will be cheaper than buying a well disguised basket case

Don't mean to be negative, just cautious!

may be a good buy...

I was just adding up the cost so far in a somewhat partial restoration (body to bare metal with new metal/front fenders) and the restoration shop is at 350 hours with I hope only about 50 to go. You can calculate what I have paid so far @ $65/hour. What I am saying is it may be less expensive (and certainly is) to buy a well restored e9 @ $30,000 then to buy one as I did @ $6500 (which on the surface appeared "pretty good" with only a couple of rust bubbles showing) and sink a bunch of money into it. As mentioned though, if you are paying the $30k, be sure it is as advertised with NO RUST or other issues.

when enuf is enuf...

I have to agree totally with psch. I paid almost the same as he, and have a little more in mine, and haven't completely finished the interior to the same level as the paint/body work. I dont know where you are, but for 30K, I hope that this is a desert/Cali (not cartel..) car. When you say that the body is not flawless, I hope that you mean a scratch or two, a ding, or similar. If you mean ANY rust bubbles at that price, keep looking. Get someone from this board, or someone that knows E9's intimately to check the car out. (Yes, Murray, I would have saved money if I'd have come west and let you find a car for me, over what I have spent.) For the same reason that you pay a home inspector before you buy a house...E9's are like icebergs, 97% of the problems are not visible. For the seller's price, I would hope that the car is an 8-8.25, with the remainder of that being things that have nothing to do with body-work, except maybe paint. Best of luck. Coupes

My "dry bodied" coupe came from California and it had rust. Don't take it for granted that dry climate cars are rust free. No coupe is.

No offense to those on the left coast, but I'm not sure that people from CA know what rust is

What is rust & corrosion--just ask

This West Coast Coupe Guy may know R & C when confronted

1) why/how--grew up in the rural midwest--plenty of rust present to battle.
2) spent several years at sea as a Naval Officer responsible for shipboard repair during wartime--never ending supply of rust & corrosion in that environment--waged a constant battle against its damaging effects at sea.
3) survived Detroit, MI for 11 years--FYI--Detroit sits on one of the largest salt mines in the country & none was ever spared to clear winter streets--survived that dreadful environ--lost the #1 1956 Plymouth Fury produced that I had & drove daily--live & learn--as with a coupe in similar environment--the body did not survive.
4) on to 3 years in suburban NJ--hardly the State's PR claim of being the "Garden State"--as rust flourishs everywhere
5) now a long time resident of CA & retired Senior Naval Officer--was Commander of three different aviation maintenance units during long Navy career--corrosion is not a stranger to Navy aircraft of all types
6) distributed the POR-15 rust prevention products to auto, marine & commercial customers battling to control R & C--not any more

now--contrary to the above comment that stimulated this long story & response--this west coast owner admits to knowing a fair amount about the subject of R & C from many years of first hand experiences--admit to also having the experience of judging many coupes to evaluate and determine condition and give an estimate on the local price they may bring--now with almost 36 years of multiple CS ownership along the way, still caring for my first one--the BLUMAX is a true survivor of long use--with over 408,000 miles now--it is likely the highest mileage E-9 in existence--has numerous awards gathered over the years from appearances made at BMW & local concours events up and down the West Coast--is well known by many experienced West Coast Coupe Guys including Coupe King, Carl Nelson, Hans Herman, Paul Cain, Chris Macha, Merdad Vahid & many others--many other car people have seen & admired him at the former Crystal Cove display & more recently at the Cars 'n Coffee Saturday AM event at the Ford building in Irvine--where several hundred cars of all types gather on Saturday morning--ranging from museum pieces to the newest Bugatti, Ferraris, Lambos, GT-40s, the Callaway Speedster, Porsches & everything in between gather--typically to be admired by hundreds of car folks--many express admiration & hold BLUMAX in high regard whenever displayed--am occasionally asked if I can find a comparable one for the admirer--this has not happened by accident. BLUMAX is technically an un-restored example and he is outwardly correct and original--except for Alpina staggered 16" wheels--am happy to report that due to care & upkeep learned along the way--much the hard way without guidance now available here--he is more complete & in better condition than many others around--see August 2004 issue of Bimmer Magazine and August 2007 issue of Total BMW, a UK publication--in both he was featured in a "survivor" of the fittest type article.

It's a blessing to have lived so long--and enjoying these cars as a passionate segment of a lifelong car enthusiast & hobbyist--can honestly admit the journey has been well worth the effort.

Bottom line or two:
1) when I describe a car as "dry bodied" it isn't because I lack the knowledge of knowing how to recognize where R & C hides in an E-9
2) nor do I blow smoke or BS that some seem to about a Coupes overall condition--my reputation for integrity is valuable to me--has been earned over a long time--difficult to acquire & could be easily lost!

As an occassional viewer of this forum (I owned a '74 E9 a few years ago) it never ceases of amaze me how some on this forum take everything so personal and never seem to get tired of "blowing their own horn"!!!!! People should relax, not be so uptight and enjoy life!!!!!

For 29K it better be flawless AND low mileage (you didn't say). Sight unseen I think I would pay 20K or less depending on the "excellent" condition.

When Men Were Men and Women Blushed

We need more men like Murray who aren't afraid to have an opinion, passion and just plain tell it like it is. The man earned it by living a full and interesting life. You go BluMax!!

Do you really want to know what it is worth? Use the genuine E9 system for price and value...take the price the present owner is asking for the car divide by 2 and that is what the car is worth.
