Road recommendations LA

A good friend (e34m5 and '02 sort of guy) is going to be in LA soon and is looking for twisty canyon roads to drive - any recommendations? Tried searching and drowned in unrelated hits.

"LA" is a big place. It would help to know where he will be starting from. All of the above recommendations are great, but depending on where he will be based, some of them could involve spending 1-1/2 hours crawling through congested freeways or slow city streets before he gets there.

Also, is he looking for a full day's drive, or an hour's worth of fun?
 
Thanks guys - I'll pass this on to him. Not sure where in LA but I think inland from Santa Monica so - San Gabrial Mtns? Last time I was in LA was 1960 so a little misty memory syndrome. He'll go where the roads are.

He's renting a BMW 1200RT to putter around San Diago, Palm Springs and such for a couple of days and then a day with a Ducati Monster for the canyons. He has a Duc 996 here but the roads just don't compare so he is looking forward to this.

I would just end up hurting myself.

Take the 15 to the 76 to S6 to Palomar Mountain Rd. to Palomar Observatory. Unforgettable.

Actually I hear the air is better. We regularly had Little League games cancelled because of smog.

I rented a Buell Blast years ago and just drove it back and forth across Mulholland drive all day. What an awful bike, but a great road.

Kanan is nice for a leisurely drive but way too many cops for a more spirited experience. Take the 101N/101W to Westlake Blvd Exit (Thousand Oaks/Westlake Village). Go southwest till you get to what looks like the end of the road. You will see Westlake Elementary on your right. Keep on going straight. When you hit Mulholland Highway, you can choose one of two routes.

1. Take a left and continue till you hit Encinal Canyon Rd. Take a right and keep on going till you hit PCH. This is the shortest route.

2. Keep on going straight until you come to Decker Rd. Take it to PCH. More twists and turns.

3. Follow Mulholland to PCH. More leisurely. Longest drive of the three


Avoid on weekends!

#1 for run up to Mt. Baldy ski area and surrounding canyons, Azusa foothills area is highly regarded also.

If ya have time, take the chair up to the Summit Lodge for a snack.
Great view of Catalina Island/LA basin from up there - above 7000ft.

This thread is killing me. We have 3+ feet of snow in the yard 15 minutes south of Boston. My road is still one lane due to 6 foot snow banks. And that'a after 4 days over 32!

We'll be driving here in August.

Tod, we need a west coast coupe. Keep it out there and we all take turns going out and driving...
you, me, John, Duane, Chris, Rob, Tom... maybe a few others.
Get 10 of us and a $30K coupe only $3K :D

San Diego, north toward Temecula, then Winchester Road out to Palm Springs.
