Rocker Arms - Availability etc
Folks, I need some advice, maybe this is a topic for the tech gurus out there? First some background - I have RHD CSL which I have owned since 1984. I was was working overseas for some time so the car has been off the road since I think 1988 and although it was a runner when it went into my garage, it is no longer so. Having returned to the UK in late 2008 I am now contemplating/investigating the possibility of a restoration with my relatively meager resources. About ten years ago I was persuaded to let someone take it away with a view to getting it running as a start to a restoration. Somehow they broke two rocker arms and I had the car re-interred in my garage at my home. June 2008 my son dragged the car out of the garage, gave it a wash and took a few photos. He also said that he was able to turn the engine over fairly easily with a spanner on the crankshaft.
Question One - Can anyone supply a theory/guess why the rocker arms broke? Just so that I can figure out what is going to be tough to remove and what bits I might need to replace.
Today I rang a local BMW agent to find out cost and availability of a set of these rocker arms. With all his hi tech resources he could not tell me, he said there was no reference on his system to such a part number for my CSL Chassis number. SO he will have to check with the BMW factory to see whether I need to buy a complete assembled Cylinder head. Pretty good eh? I assume all UK BMW agents have equal resources so did not verify this situation via other BMW dealers.
Question Two - Does anyone know where I can economically buy components like rockers and Valve springs, gasket sets etc for E9s (from any country)?
My perhaps misguided intention is to get the car' engine running before I go any further. I do however realise that the bodywork holds the greatest potential to devour funds.

I posted a few photos of my car (chassis 2285085) here http://s733.photobucket.com/albums/ww336/weebachle/ In the next day or so I will try to add some more photos to this that are a bit more "tell it like it is" revealing.

Thanks
Graeme

Hi Graeme,

the BMW agent must have had a monkey on the computer - try using www.realoem.com and search for parts yourself then armed with the number phone the dealer and give the part number for price and availability. I find this works best. Your car will be a 1972 build on the realoem site.

The rocker arms etc are fairly standard to a lot of the big sox engines over the years and can be sourced from the likes of ww.eurocarparts.com also.

I have no idea how they broke them but it is a worry. How far did your son turn it over? If he turns it over and it meets any resistance be very careful and back off.

The M30 rocker arms aren't terribly strong. They especially don't like high revs. I wouldn't say it is a common failure point, but it is a known weakness.

Having just looked at the pics - she looks like a very original car. Interesting she has wind up windows - quite rare for uk csls.

You must have a dry garage anyway! Could be a relatively painless restoration there.

Hey Graeme
Thats a nice car you have there.. Rocker arms are hard to break unless you are my son.He has a nack for revving the motor to high and they down shifting. He has done this 2 time in 2 e30's... But thats a m20 motor.
So it is best to keep your friends out of your car.

You will need to pull the head. Find another parts guy, easy..

these guys can get you started..

I'm sure others will also have more imput on local parts.

Good Luck
