The cover is held along it's upper edge by SS screws which I have from W&N. The lower portion of the panel also has holes for attachment (see borrowed picture) and mine was held with rivets which I drilled out. Ready to re-attach and not sure what goes through the lower holes, read a ton of posts and could not get any idea. As mentioned in other posts, the RealOEM diagram is confusing and the parts list actually shows 2 rivets.

BTW: Many wrote of difficulty with the white plastic clips and the cover molding not clicking in place. One solution was a nylon washer around the neck of the clip to hold it out just a smidge from the cover. I learned an old trick, use a tiny rubber O-ring instead of the washer. It pulls the clip out enough so the molding can clip snugly in place while obturating the hole and making it water tight.

Wow, obturating. Thanks for that word, I'll add it to my lexicon.
Great tip. If I am reading your method correctly I kind of did a similar thing with my trim strips by cutting very thin plastic pieces to fit between the sliding threads in the trim and the body of the car to avoid having the trim cut into the paint.

According to my SAT scores, I should not even be able to talk! I have to look up the o ring size, I got a box of them in my Bavaria but car is in storage. I had the problem with the Bav belt trim and a bodyshop that does vintage BMW's gave me the tip. Idea on what fastener is used for the lower part of the rocker cover????

same SS screws as above other than the riveting has enlarged the holes

I bought those white plastic clips from W&N. The tech at the restoration shop removed the pins and forced them into the rocker panels. Then he hammered the pins into the unobturated holes. 'nuff said.....

The stainless steel screws are available from walloth and Nesch.
I think any steel sheet screw will work.
I guess they are about 3x12 mm with a cross head ph2 head screw, but the parts book will provide the definite answer.

If all is good down there, rustwise speaking, then it surely is a quick method to get it done. The only downside is that this way it is hard to remove the trim. For a real good clean or underlying rust repair it would be nice of you can seperate the two. Using not the.pin, but an metric bolt will work just as well, and have the benefit that you can easily seperate them.

Perhaps even if it is the next owner who will find out, but someday, someone will appreciate it.

Indeed sweet paintjob and panel fit!

I have dealt with similar clips before on my E24's, I run a bead of WD 40 along the top edge of the molding, wait 5 min then use one of those tools used to remove a door card. They actually pop out fairly easily.......................these things catch so much sand etc (up here in NE) and the rocker cover starts to rust behind them. I have to pop them off and clean up every 5 years or so. I don't expect the E9 to do much better.
