I’m a little confused when I look at the schematics on the structure rocker panels and covers.

its been too long but I don’t think I had any covers on my old 2800… maybe I did and I don’t remember… was 30 years ago.

Anyway, can some one give me a little schooling here. I tried searching for pictures here. But apparently I really suck at using the search function.

Deep, deep inside is the unibody core "inner sill" (#9). Welded to that, still deep inside is the "intermediate sill" strengthening piece with the "sine wave" and holes (#8). That is covered by the welded on "outer sill" (#7) (shown laying in the car below). This makes up the car's rocker and door sill. Then, once all is welded together, there is the clipped (and screwed on the bottom and ends) decorative outer sill cover (#3) This trim comes in a black rock chip finish with a long rubber trim strip (#1) that has a stainless trim attached to it. There is also a gasket (#4) that hides the huge, inconsistent gaps between the trim and the body.

The black decorative outer sill trim covers the rocker's lower pinch welds and the hidden rust horrors so often present in the rockers and has probably led to quite a few post-purchase surprises. There's a good post here re: installing the trim.

As far as I am aware, all e9s had the black outer sill covers. Maybe they were painted body color on your 2800 or you just never realized they were there. 2000 CSs have a polished stainless cover which IMHO is much nicer. I think the black rocker raises the visual height of the e9 body. This, and the fiddly fit and unavailability of the stock trim is why the silver CSE has a welded outer panel painted body color.

That is an incredible write up Jeff. Thanks a ton.

Upon further inspection I have the covers on the new 2800. They are painted body color from a really bad respray it had at some point.

I’m going to pull them… not that I really want to see what is underneath but we have to eventually. The right cover is pretty rotten. I imagine it’s bad.

Thanks again. I couldn’t see those pics on WN’s website worth crap. I did get my binder from them with my order today.
