guys, my car doesn't have the chrome / rubber moldings installed at the rocker panels. i have a pair and want to install them, but as there aren't any holes in my rockers, i am curious as to where they are mounted and what kind of fastener is used. if anybody could post a couple of detailed pix ... i would be most appreciative.

in looking at real oem, under section 51-20, image 51/14 there are 2 different things that could be used in the drawing - either a screw (11) or a rivet (2)

thanks in advance
scott

If the car originally had rivets they were only used at either end in the wheel wells. Screws were used for the sides. A lot of times the rivets were drilled out in order to remove the covers and never reinstalled and a screw was used in its place or just left empty.

Steve,

i think my rocker covers were replaced. there is a flat trim that wraps into both wheel wells with a screw in each end. there seems to be a mark to drill a hole for a screw into the rocker to mount the trim ... just didn't know if it was supposed to be a rivet in the side or a 3.5 x 13 recessed oval head screw. i also didn't know exactly where the trim is supposed to be positioned since there is no mark.

hi scott,

probably this can help:

http://www.e9coupe.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9119

please take care of the possible ways of solution, of course the best way will be using the original clips, so that you will need some holes, if i remember well those are 8,5mm holes, anyway check it with the clips

the parts (mouldings) i got from walloth, came with studs in both ends (front end one stud, and another one in the rear end), that means 8 holes 2 for the studs, and 6 for the clips

i found the white clips unable to clamp the moulding, so i changed to the black clips (supposed to be used in the e3 mouldings), and it worked well !

anyway i had to make some changes in the assembly desing, because i found that is was impossible to fix the front and rear end studs

the rear one was impossible to access from behind to place a nut, so i cancell this fixing point and substitute it by a new hole nearby and a clip (yes it is impossible to remove the stud from the moulding)

the front one was too short to reach the wheelarch from inside to place a nut there, so i elongate the stud with this solution, and then it was ok:

i said in the thread that it took me 9 months to close this issue, probably it is easier to go straigth to some PU mastik, if you ask a professional to do it sucess will be guaranteed....but anyway, i preferred this way

regards, and do not hesitate to ask for help, you will be welcomed

no, the correct part is number (16), that is the white clip ! bmw reference: 51 13 1 808 841

the black clip is: bmw reference: 51131807716

I do not know if it is clear that there is a 2mm difference in the height of the contact area (referred to the clip clamps), see this (the white clips need those extra 2mm)

before asking for them, consider the type of assembly that you are going to undertake, and then you will ask for 12, or 14 (if you take the same solution as me adding an additional fixing point in the rear end)

thanks deQuincey!

the pictures + description are very helpful. as a follow up question, are the moldings from Walloth factory BMW trims or OEM? i have no experience with them, hence the question. mine are NOS ... the reason for the question is determining whether it would be worth trying the white clips or the black ones.

your question is relevant, but unfortunately i can not answer it

anyway we can make a comparison that will solve this question:

1- check is your mouldings have two studs, one in each end, similar to those i am showing in my pictures, (take care, my front stud has been elongated, so you should have a simple short lengthed one)

2- check the shape of your moldings using a rule in a similar way as you can see in one of my pics, and see if the section curvature is similar or different, if it is similar, i would ask for the black clips, if it is more flat than mine, you will be able to use the white ones

if you want me to give you my opinion please post some photos of your mouldings

I just installed mine, old original moldings to new W & N panels. I ordered clips from them too, they send me black ones, they're too long, and moldings will be loose. I mailed them told about the difference and they send me white ones -works perfect !.
-So the White ones really are right clips
-They were selling black ones (E3 ?) for E9 and they thought difference was only colour, and were unaware of the different height

it is not that clear, you are only discovering that there are two combinations of body + mouldings, black ones worked ok for me (old panels and new mouldings), and white ones are ok for you

by the way, one year ago, when i bought the mouldings from w&n they gave me the white clips, not the black ones ! so why are they selling now the black clips ? ...mmmmm strange

Just to further confuse things I have 25 year old NOS panels and mouldings and tried using the white clips(51131808841),they were too short.I was at a car show in the Fall and purchased metal "clips" with a flat square head on a short threaded stud that I think will work but haven't gotten around to it yet. They were a buck apiece compared to the almost $4 the dealer wants for the Bavaria ones.
