Rolled Fenders

Another novice question: What exactly is accomplished by "rolling" the fenders? Does it just tuck up the sheet metal around the wheel wells or does it "pull out" the wheel openings? Are there variations or degrees of "rolling"? Any information would be helpful-or pictures too
