I am putting the car back together and I noticed that the grommet that surrounds the wiring harness, just to the right of the brake booster extension was out. So I tried to fit it back into its hole. When it didn't want to go in, I looked at it more closely and it looks like there is a flat piece of metal inside the hole that keeps the inside part of the grommet from seating properly around the hole. There also seems to be a similar flat piece at the top of the hole on the inside. Each seems to be held in place by that M8 bolt seen in the photo below. How is they round grommet supposed to fit inside a hole that has been "squared" inside?

Is it ??? That would make sense it there is a wiring harness going in there...

I thought you need to jump two wires or you won’t have a circuit to the starter. Check the wiring diagram first.

Hey Chris. Don't mean to hi-jack this conversation, but is the "relay" and wiring in these pics the same thing - remnants of having an automatic transmission? Or is this something else? This is on the top of the brake booster extension, right behind the booster. I'd planned on tracing the wires, referencing the schematic and researching this in the near future. But this conversation seems it may have landed on this topic.

A relay with green wires was the cold start/choke circuit. Bo’s wires were blue, I would need to check the wiring diagrams again.

FYI I had re-read Carl’s 5 speed conversion write up as well as nosmonkey’s illustrated one and neither is very clear on this issue. If we ever compile a full doc on this subject we should probably clarify this.

I think you are absolutely right, Chris. With your help in narrowing this search down, I pulled out the wiring diagram and as you remembered, the original automatic choke circuit relay had about (6) green wires going to it and (1) brown wire. That appears to be exactly what I captured in the pic. I am not by the car to triple confirm this, but I am sure that is it. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Very timely that I came across this post. Today I removed wiring harness from my e9, the very last thing to strip from the chassis.

I was going over my labeling and realised I had no idea what these wires/relay were for.. they were also fixed just above the brake booster extension.
When I got the car they were not connected to anything, somebody just taped the ends up and left them in there.. so they clearly weren’t being used for anything.

So you guys think this is some sort of automatic choke system? How does that work?

Btw My car is a 1975 3.0cs with an alpina B2 engine and triple solex carbs.
I assume there is no harm removing this from the wiring completely?

Thabks for the info!
