Roundels - raised or flat?

For some time now I have been wondering whether my car should have 'flat' roundels or roundels with raised letters.

My CSL has raised letters on all three roundels (front and C pillars). My car doesn't have the small roundel fitted on the rear spoiler lip.

I have seen many cars (older and younger than mine) where the roundels on the C pillar are 'flat' in fact I haven't seen very many E9s with roundels with raised letters! Does this even belong on the E9?

I assume that the roundels with raised letter are older than flat roundels - is this correct? Is there a cut-off point (year/month) where the roundels become 'flat'?
 
Raised. They started selling flat plastic roundels in the 80s, which is why most of them today are flat.
 
Rumor has it

that BMW recommisioned the raised letter roundels. I recently placed an order with Penske which upon arrival contained a front raised roundel at a very modest price. (Less than $20, which in the past could have cost a considerable sum for an original type item. )
 
Too short pins

I seem to recall some of the front and rear emblems, newly manufactured I suppose, have too short pins, esp when mounted at the front.
 
I didn't measure the pins

but when installed it's secure. Thinking of purchasing a new rear since it's flatish compared to the front. Oh well, so goes the slipperly slope.:)
 
The raised emblems are back...!

Just 2 days ago ago I walked past a brand new 328 that was parked and I noticed that the emblem on the trunk lid had the raised letters. They are not as raised as the old ones, though.

Kind of a bummer because I had been looking for raised emblems for a while and finally ordered a pair of flat ones the day before... :neutral:
 
My 72 CSL has raised front and rear emblems and cloisonné (decorated with a pattern formed by pieces of enamel in various colors separated by strips of flattened wire) on the sides. My car is very original, and since Jimmy Baker put them on there, I'm pretty sure they are correct! {:>)
 
The 2000C and CS had enameled cloisonne roundels on the front nose, "C" pillars, & decklid.

The early 2800CS (as well as 2500 and 2800 sedans) had enameled cloisonne roundels on the front nose, "C" pillars, & decklid.

In late 71 E9's as well as E3's got the raised letter nose and decklid roundels. This coincides with the "Bavaria" marketing in the states. The coupe "C" pillar roundels remained cloisonne.

Around the same time of the 2nd series bodywork changes (late '73), all roundels had become the raised letter type on all standard production cars, including the "C" pillars on coupes.

I don't think I have ever seen an original small-grill coupe supplied with all raised letter roundels, nor have I seen a 74 or 75 with any cloisonne.

Huh. My C-pillar roundels are raised. I guess they were replaced that way during the 80s resto. A replacement set I ordered back in 2007 were flat.
