Seat belt installation

Seat belt

I have bought retractable seat belts that I will install in my car, BMW 3.0 CS 1972. As I understand, the belts can be installed at different positions in respect to the roof/headliner. Previously, the upper fixing point of the belt has been positioned at the top of the c-post (underneath the headliner), refer to picture.

I plan to install the upper fixing point of the belt at the imaginary B-post (underneath the headliner), refer to picture.

I have following questions:

1. I believe that there is a mounting point/plate at the imaginary B-post (I can feel the plate for the bolt underneath the headliner). Is this correct (and should/could it be used for the seat belt)?

2. I am somewhat concerned about the angle of the seat belt if the imaginary B-post is used. If this position is used - the belt will have a rather sharp angle from the imaginary B-post to the end point (refer to picture ) due to the relative height/distance of the upper fixing point (headliner) in respect to the end point. So – I wonder:

a. Will the sharp angel be a problem?
b. Should I try to avoid the sharp angle (use some kind of extension to lower the fixing point at the imaginary B-post)?

Best Swedish regards,

Per Osterberg

Belt Anchor Point

I have a 1972 CS (production date 7/71) there is no anchor point at the roof B pillar on my car, the only anchor point is behind the rear seat. I bought a set of retractable belts then had the later model BMW buckles installed on the new belts. I would prefer the roof anchor point but that would require welding the car has already been painted... I'm not going there. This setup seems to work fine, I have Recaros in my car, I had a friend make a belt holders that slide onto the headrest post. The belts retract and they're not laying all over like the original belts.

Try to find the special E9 seat belts manufactured by "Klippan"

Hej!

If you have the prepared achor point in the roof ("B-pilar"), you could use it. This solution was used by the Swedish BMW importeur (Förenade Bil), together with the special E9 "Klippan" seat bealts, on the E9s sold in Sweden. These Klippan seat bealts have the special extension (and some springs to hold back the seat bealt when entering the rear seat) for the E9 cars. Without that extension, for the roof anchor point, the angle will be to sharp.

These Klippan seat belts are the best solution for the E9 cars if you want to be close to a factory solution. Another alternative are the Autoflug "race" seat belts.

The "Klippan" seat bealts with the extension can be seen on some of the interior pictures from this CSL (sold new in Sweden):

I have the "race" 4-point which the original owner specified...sometimes I use it as a 3-point.

Hej Per!

This is a close up how "Klippan" on the E9s sold in Sweden looks like, with the functionality "CSL 1973" described.

Paul Cain used an e32 seat belt using the roof mount that was added to U.S. `73 models with a retractor mounted below where the b pillar would have been. The retractor is hidden however and he had to make many mods.

More of Klippan!!!

I might as well continue when I was using the camera in the inside the car. This is how I used another set of old Klippan belts I had in the storage. I (temporarily) replaced the original non retractable 3 point rear belts with these. Same installation points used.
I sometimes bring along my kids in the car, so this is specially for them. Not at all original, but more safe and convenient (and still 1973 Klippan equipment...)
