Many of us here have experience customizing/making amendments to other vehicles, and I thought I would ask if you have had any experiences trying to improve a driver seat cushion for someone who has bad back, leg pain..etc. My spouse had a car accident a couple of years ago and is left with some pain, but it is especially severe after about 30 minutes of driving her Subaru. With careful arranging of pillows, other padding, she can tolerate a short drive, but I wonder if anyone here has found a seat cushion material that has helped in a similar circumstance. Recaro builds many custom seats, but there is no distributor near here to try one on so to speak. Would be interested in surgery to her Subaru seat, rather than her back. Comments? Thanks, Mike

is it seat bottom or seat back? or both. i know the local porsche dealer told me they have sent some cars to a place and had the seats built up within the existing leather to create better support - on cars that didn't have the electric seat option.

i also remember seeing a company that sold the inflatable bladder that would allow the seat back to be pumped up with a bulb, and i think you could adjust the pressure to build up lumbar support

seat cushion

Thank you RS,
It is specifically seat cushion. We have tried various backrest accommodations, but most response seems to come from seat cushion "tweaking". Thanks for your interest and input.

seat

Hi Mike

Give the guys a call at Pacific Auto Trim, they are on 5th ave W about 2 blocks east of Cambie. Ask for John, he is the new owner ( old employee ) he bought out the fellow that originally stated it Lou, have known Lou for years and they do great work. They might know something that could be done

Thanks, Rick

BMW made an option for the 7 series (starting with the e38, I think) for a "massage" seat. I looked at retrofitting this into one of my e39s.

It is not really a massage option, but instead is intended to prevent back pain. It consists of two bladders that you sit on, along with an air compressor and some sort of logic or timer board and a switch.

When you activate the system, it inflates one side for a set period of time, deflates, and then inflates the other side. The theory is that backaches are caused by prolonged pressure on your lower back. The bladders periodically shift your hips from side to side, changing the pressure on your back.

If you are having someone rebuild seat cushions for you, the bladders sit on top of the normal seat cushion material just under the leather. The electrical portion of this looked pretty simple, but then again the e39/e38 electrical systems are vastly different than the e9s.

seat fix

Thanks Rick, Ohmess and teahead. These are very helpful. Rick I think I know that place. Ohmess, that sounds like a wonderful seat. I never knew about that, and you are correct, it is the prolonged sitting, and it probably affects all of us, but some of us have a shorter tolerance I guess. These seat bladders are something to check out. Thanks!
Mike
