My E9 has the Palo Alto Rosenthal license plate frame because the previous owner, Harold Hurst, was a mechanic at Rosenthal until the place was sold in 1998. My E9 was stored and on display there for many years because Harold did not want to leave the car at home outside the garage. Les Rosenthal opened the place in 1973, perhaps before there were official BMW dealers in California. I heard stories about Les and the good old days from a few people.
Today I somehow decided to drive the E9 to get some food, on the way I decided it would be the Castelli's deli, beautiful day, and I parked in the 10' slot at the deli entrance. Many people sitting outside looked at the new arrival and then a BMW SUV blocked my car from the rear. A gentleman comes out and says "I have been following you to see who is driving my car!".
It was Les Rosenthal, he plays music and had a gig in Santa Cruz tonight.
What a reunion! Let's see if this new friendship leads me to buying the original wooden dealership sign he still possesses.
I almost drove the E24 instead, just serendipity.
