Just curious really, most of us here are owners of E9 coupes, and some of us are looking to buy (I lurked on this site for a long while before jumping in). What expectations of service history did you have/do you have when buying a 45 year old classic BMW?
I am a car tinkerer, meaning that I do most of my own work looking after my own cars, moderns and classics. For moderns you would definitely expect to take a hit when you come to sell if the service history is all or mostly DIY. For classics it's not so clear-cut, at least here in the UK.
Personally, I bought my CSL (and my other classics) almost solely on condition, and did not worry so much about the pile of expensive invoices for servicing and/ or maintenance labour charges.
My DIY work is mostly mechanicals, in that I am not going to be welding or doing bodywork, or indeed any major restoration work; anything necessary here would be out-sourced to a specialist. The M30 engine, and the E9 brakes and other mechanicals, are all relatively simple, compared to comparable classics, which makes DIY a much safer option IMHO.

your thoughts?

I don't think it is very important. Ideally, the car would have had regular fluid changes, brake fluid every three years or so, coolant every five, gerabox every 3-5, and synthetic oil annually, but if the car cools well at this moment in time, and the cars doesn't have sticky calipers at this moment, that is more important than a stack of receipts. As you said, buy based on current condition. Test all the cars systems and get a compression and leakdown test.
Engines are simple and robust.
