Hi Folks, In the picture below which connecting set-up would you use. The shaft seems to be the same size but the knuckle on one has an offset. Just trying to solve a notchy shifting problem where the transmission seems to be in great condition, it's quiet and goes into all gears but sometimes I have a difficult time getting it into reverse from a stand still and into second when going slowly forward.. The transmission came out of an 85 535i and has no problem shifting through the gears and does not pop out of any gear so I'm hoping it's just in the shifter set up as the same problems have occurred in other cars when the shift platform is loose.

Also, not sure of the orientation of the shift linkage pieces. As always, any help is most appreciated.

Peter: from the picture, both lengths are the same and the sideways shafts have the same diameter. If the dimensions are the same, even it it was tied in a knot (tunnel clearance issues aside), the effect should be the same.

Maybe, in the language now prevalent, you have a "special" part.

Have you checked the factory fiche to see if it illustrates a "twisted" shaft, perhaps for other models?

On a shift rod with asymmetric pins the long pin goes to the rear. Use washers to shim the shifter so that it is centered in the console.
Don’t forget the e36 knuckle

Give UUC a call and for recommendation. Tell them what ya got and they'll advise. It was fairly straight forward.

HTH.

Depends on your application, I was upgrading to 5 speed and using a 320i shift lever for a shorter throw. For this I used the 144mm dogbone to replace that stock lever. More info here:

on the UUC, check carefully, the one length, some of them have a bend and won't work
it might be the 144, they used to make a straight but not now
I don't remember for sure which length it was, so ask before ordering

I can see how the UCC dog bone removes play / slop. I am sold on that idea especially for durability.
Perhaps some one can explain how a short shift gear linkage works? I assume it is the length of the gearstick that protrudes beneath the pivot point?
When a 320i gearstick is mentioned, is this from an E36? What's the best place to buy that, breakers yard?
Thanks

The stock linkage torques, the UUC is noticably stiffer, as in no twisting at all. Combined with the bronze bushings is a sweet setup. Yes, it's the lower lever is what you need, from an E21, it fits the stock upper lever and screw-on knob.
