I am getting the dreaded shock tower damage on one side.

Is the best plan to weld a new stronger tower, or somehow weld and reinforce the top of the existing one?

Any good places to do that here in the Bay Area?

Assuming

it's the rear, then 1/8" plate, suitable diameter slightly smaller than the the tower, with a corresponding hole for the shock rod.

Welded by anyone with a mig with moderate skill. A body shop that welds perhaps or if you can fab the part most areas have wlders that are mobile and may come to your house.

Arde,

Did both of my shock towers about 5 years ago at Phaedrus in San Francisco. The repair cost $400 per tower back in late 2007. The cracked metal section on my coupe's left shock tower was removed and a round plate was then welded on top of the tower cone. Also did the same repair on my undamaged right tower at the same time as a "preventive procedure". Excellent results with no further problems since. Here is my old post on the Shock tower repairs.

Thanks. I assume they did the work themselves so it is worth driving up to San Francisco.
Do you have a contact name there?

Yes...the repair work was done in house! Ask for John or Dale, 2 of the principal owners of the shop. Phaedrus (exclusively BMWs) has worked on my CS (2) and M6 since the early 1990's. A little on the pricey side, but they are very knowledgeable on the older BMWs and in particular, the E9 coupes.

Heads up....Sometimes existing speaker holes can provide easier access to help do an even better job. Lower rear window remove trunk lid.
Good luck!

Great. Dropping the car tomorrow evening with Dale. I think it will be the first time I drive Verona into the city!
