Hi, all. Not much time to spare, but I wondered if anyone who's online would look at this ebay listing (Getrag 265) and opine as to whether it's a good purchase. What stands out to me is that the seller APPEARS to be willing to put the appropriate bell housing and shifter unit on it before he sends it.

It's also high-mileage, but the price seems worth the sum of its parts at the very least.

If I bid, I'll probably be bidding on this with eight seconds to go, as is my custom. Thanks in advance!

Ebay Getrag

Decent price if you can get it at the lower bid price. It's been for sale for a while and recently dropped the price. Make sure it has everything you want. The mileage isn't bad.

Shifter, bellhousing, crossmenber if possible.

You are the best...

Thank you, my friend.

The guy managed to reply in the last hour -- bell housing and shifter included in price; no cross member. Front section of driveshaft is available though.

I'll probably go for it. Wish me luck.

Try to get it in before the six months are up, this seller sold a noisy 5 speed to a fellow 2002 owner, he did provide a refund however.

Good Data...

Ok, also good information. Suppose I had better get going on the driveshaft shortening, in that case. Thanks, Chris.

Hello, Friends! Large photos to follow:

The Getrag 265 arrived. It looks to be as-specified and in great shape. If anyone here who has made this swap themselves could give this a quick visual inspection, I'd be grateful. In particular, please look at the slave cylinder and the clutch bearing fork and tell me if you think I should not re-use them.

See anything that should make me hesitate to put it in the car?

By the way, what is the shifting pattern for this transmission?

1 3 5
I-I-I
2 4 R

??

Thanks!

The shifting pattern is like other BMWs:

R 1 3 5
- - - -
- 2 4

I guess they didn't want anyone crunching reverse when trying to shift into an imaginary 6th gear.

Also looks like it has the mech speedo gear in it, nice touch. It also appears to have the correct (for the trans) clutch slave cylinder, another nice bit. I will say this about the rest of the package: now is an excellent time to refresh all the shifter bushings and go for a short shift kit if you want it. It is vastly easier to do it with the trans out of the car. It is also an excellent time to replace the front and rear trans seals, and if you are going to replace the clutch, the engine rear main seal. You will need a new pilot bearing, throw-out bearing, and guibo at the very least.

Speedometer cable?

Update: The swap is in-progress and going well. I wonder about the speedometer cable, though. Do I really need to source one from an automatic car like Carl Nelson suggests or did any of you manage to make your stock cable work?

Very useful.

Thanks - No, I had not seen that until now. The timing is perfect, though, as the new seals for the transmission will be showing up in a day or two.

Looks like he didn't comment on the length of the speedometer cable. Good. I think I'll try to use the one I have. If worse comes to worse, I can go without a speedometer during my first few test drives.

We'll see how the custom crossmemeber comes out, also! This will be an adventure...
