Side engine mount for stand

Happy Friday!

I was wondering how I'd change the rear engine seal (easily) until I saw this post on Instagram and thought 'I can make one of those!"

So far so good... even 'bounced' as a stress test.

I think I should make a Resto forum. Or just include a link to a shareable Google pictures folder.

That is the OE BMW engine stand of the era. There were adapters for the engine, auto Trans, differential etc. Those stands were very strong, I mounted 2 M20 motors on one at the same time. There were 2 sides to the stand as to where you could mount 2 fixtures at the same time. Made in Germany, they were great. You could also rotate the motor or whatever you had mounted 360 degrees on one axis and you could lock it at 90 degree intervals. It was about the coolest setup I have encountered. Oh and they had wheels on the base as to where you could roll it easily even with two motors mounted. I have pictures somewhere, I should try and find them.
 
Nice setup.

Alfa guys always do side mount using the motor mount holes. Less stress on the cheapo stand and you can get to everything for rebuilding.

Here is a quicky I did for my Alfa motor. The section of 5” mild steel tube cost $15 and only took 15min to mark and drill out. It provides twice the clearance as the mounting arms that came with the stand, and Allowed me to position so the motor was balanced (and therefore easy to rotate).

Oh ya...I looked for one and other aftermarket ones with no luck. The BMW stand looks awesome but then again its a factory tool!

DB AKA real name is Brenden is a local friend and quite the engine/race car builder. You may have seen his Gosser Beer Green E9 race car.
He owns a number of BMW special tools mostly sourced from retiring shop owners in the area.
Just last week I missed a BMW valve depression tool for removing the rockers and valves on M30 heads.
He got it and I wanted it. Damn.

This thread really interested me as I was never really very happy with the way that my engine stand supported a block, let alone a full engine. It always felt a bit ‘strained’, so seeing this gave me an idea. This was the original fixing mechanism:

So I had a look around and found a length of 10mm steel in my shed, so cut a length and drilled some holes. I have to say I’m much happier with the location now! I just used the engine mounts to bolt to:
