hey guys, i was asked this question and literally have never seen them side by side. anybody happen to know? i looked on realoem and saw that they were different part numbers ... but that could be something very insignificant or something very major.

I read that BMW couldn’t fit the redesigned e3 rear suspension in the e9. The e9 was a carryover design from the NK, and the e3 was new. I’m confident that with modification, one can make it work if people are installing e28
subframes in their e9.

thanks Markos ... great information. when we pull mine out of the car, will have to take a look. a friend put a e28 subframe in an e3 along with a fire-breather engine. but the idea of an e28 rear subframe in a coupe sounds intriguing. i will do a search to read what others have done. if no such luck i will come back and post the question.

You don’t have to travel far to see a working example.

yes, i read that. Brendan is putting the new engine into the car and some of the primary stuff in. then the painter will finish the car and then get @sfdon to come to ATL an put megasquirt on the car (and drink a bunch of wine together).

i have decided that the rear subframe will be done later - either before or after the engine is running, i want to get rid of the 2800cs drums. but i will just discuss the e28 subframe experience with him ... i am planning to just add toe / camber and diff brace to the e9 subframe. i already have all of the swing arms powder coated, and all of the stub axles, etc all ready with mostly new parts.

Hey Scott - I just ran across this thread. I have an e9 subframe, modified for the Ireland Engineering toe/camber adjustment setup. You would need to acquire from them a handful of their square ribbed "nuts" to use my subframe, but this would save you the welding of the runners onto the subframe. I believe they sell these square ribbed things separately, as I bought a spare at one point.
