Hi there

I have a 265 OD gearbox for sale (mechanical speedo!). This gearbox came with my '73 bavaria when I bought it. After I converted the automatic car to a manual, I learned this gearbox has a problem with the mainshaft bearing/s. This is described in this post,

The gearbox shifts very smoothly to from all gears.

I have replaced this gearbox with a reconditioned 265 OD so I am selling this gearbox to someone who can rebuild it. Good used ones sell for 2,000-3,000 USD and fully rebuilt sell for 3,500-3,900 USD. I am asking 1000 USD however I will accept a best offer. It has all new seals, if it matters. As reference, the shipping for the replacement gearbox was ~200 USD Los Angelas CA to Edmonton CAN via Fedex.

Hello

If the Forum and those who know more about gearboxes do not mind, please let me know what a fair price is for his gearbox? I am open to offers.

Bill

Tough discussion.
In 20 years I have never replaced a 265/6 bearing. Either bearing not available or more expensive to fix than the tranny is worth.
Synchros - yes
Seals - yes
Another thought is that if the bearing is gone then the tranny is overall worn.

I remove the speedo gears on bad trannys and give them to the tranny shop.

The noise is from main shaft based on noise in certain gears and listening w a electronic chassis ear, it shifts very well/ no syncro issues, and the play in the box is the same as the one I replaced it with. Doubt its overall worn; when I got it and after changing the oil and then running it for about 100 miles and changing the oil again, there was no metal fillings on the magnetic drain plug.

OBO accepted.

Cheers,
Bill

Call Jim at Metric Mechanic. He will likely give you a fair price for it if the international shipping does not kill the deal.
