I never heard of the e9 as being the shark, I thought the e24 was the first to use that moniker.

Someone from Hardy and Beck referred to them as a Shark in the early 80's when I stoped in. e24 just took it over when they superseded the e9 (IMHO nothing can supersede the e9), the guy I bought my e9 from in Germany almost 30 years ago sold the e9 because it was being "superseded".

Porsche 928's are also referred to as Sharks.
