Speedo and Tacho problem

Hello all,

I'm a new member and hopefully can get some help on this problem before I run out of points on my license.

The speedo on my RHD 3.0 csi has stopped working, is there any troubleshooting I can do on this? for a month prior to this it was reading probably only 1/2 what the true speed was. Good for 2 speeding tickets so far...

Another intermittent problem I have is that the tacho sometimes wants to jump around. It will drop out altogeher and then jump back into life and then bounce around for a while before settling. This sometimes happens for a day and then won't be seen again for months...could it be related to the speedo issue??

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the madness. The Speedo and Tach are completely unrelated. The tach is electronic, and gets its signal from the coil. I'd check connections at the coil (can't recall the wire color) as well as those at the back of the tach. It's not easy to get to, you'll need you a good light and a strong back. You'll also probably need to remove the kick panel above the pedal cluster so you can see behind the dash.

The speedo is mechanical, so I'd start with the cable. It connects to the transmission on the driver's side and goes through the firewall. You should be able get underneath the car and remove the cable to see if it's in one piece are not. If it's not the cable you're going to need to have to remove the speedo and send it to either Palo Alto Speedometer or Hollywood Speedo. I've never seen one fail, they're usually pretty reliable, but there's always exceptions.

'bout that speedo

since the speedo is mechanically driven by a cable from the back of the trans, an intermittent speedo isn't likely to be caused by a cable binding in its sheath.

But maybe, just maybe, the trans end of cable isn't well seated in the trans. So jack it up, block it up, crawl under. IIRC, the speedo cable is set into the trans with a 6mm bolt; loosen it, pull the cable and sheath out. The cable end should be square, and look "threaded" )but it's not). If it looks okay, I'd stick it back in, you may have to wiggle it a bit or a bunch to get the square end to seat into the trans just right. Then reset the little fixing bolt, crawl out from under and clean up.

Oh wait... while you're under there... have a look at the guibo (no cracks allowed) and the shift tower if you've got a 4speed or 5speed. The tower ears at 10 and 2 oclock must not be turning to mush or your shifting will be really sloppy. Look about for leaks, rust, other inappropriate behavior. NOW crawl out, jack up, chocks away, let 'er down, clean and put away tools, clean self, change clothes, go for a ride.

Geez no wonder people like new cars.
