I pulled my non-working speedo and sent it to Harmut. $450 later still does not work. I have to admit I didn't look at the cable closely before hooking it up, I did that by feel. I now figure there is no inner cable, prior owner must have removed it. Does anyone have a used one? Car is a 3.0 CS Manual but it has a 3.3 motor and 4 speed gearbox. Perhaps the speedo cable was not compatible with the new box? Prev owner said it worked for a while and then quit .. but that may or may not be true.

Buy a complete cable, there is no difference with the internals.
To be clear, it's a 633 Gearbox. Figured that out when the new gear knob would not screw on, the gear shifter shaft is slotted not threaded.
I read that it's a huge pita to switch out the cable, hence I plan to just unhook it at the bottom end, slide inner cable in, and hook it back up.

Would a speedo cable from a Bavaria work. It’s an automatic transmission.
WN shows a different part number for the cable assy for the E3 vs E9 vs E24 ... and it matters whether it's lhd or rhd (mine is lhd), auto or manual. The inner cable might work, i'll let the experts opine on that ..
I am reluctant to order a new assy from WN because it's not clear to me the E9 part will work with the E24 transmission.
