Replacing my speedo cable. Not fun.

Following up on this, I'm struggling with the grommet that protects the cable through the firewall. I put the cable in with the grommet loose on the cable and assumed I would be able to finagle the grommet into place but have wasted and hour fighting the wiring/cable/pedals/gravity/ etc with no luck.

Should the grommet go in first and then push the cable end through it. I assumed the end that goes into the tranny wouldn't push through but maybe yes with lots of lube?

Anyone done this?

i did do this ... its been a couple of years though. my memory is that i put it in from the inside out ... all together. and just worked it in there. it was a job though. i think my old brain just doesn't want to remember the pain.

I'm hoping I can push the cable through with enough lube and force. Getting the drive end into the back of the speedo was actually relatively easy.

I'll confirm this on monday.

Done!

I said I'd report back - with gobs of petroleum jelly, expletives in both our official languages and about 90 minutes of inverted car yoga amidst the wires and pedals the grommet finally popped all the way in, all the way around the hole through the firewall. Ended up using a 12" long slot screwdriver and worked it around while pushing into the centre. Lucky the grommet is tough stuff because it would be a shame to have cut it or punched a hole through it.

Next task is to flip the driveshaft centre hanger because apparently its in backwards - possibly the source of the 40mph vibration.
