I am changing the o-rings on the speedometer bushing in my 1970, e9 with automatic, (s/n 299).
Does anyone have experience with this? Does the speedo gear also need to be removed? How hard should it be to remove bushing from trans housing, and how hard to push unit back uno housing?

thanks for the site, but that is for a 4/5 speed and I have a zf3hp20 automatic. The busing is 2 piece as is the one shown in the info you provided but mine is plastic and does not have a seal as identified in the post. Mine has two O-rings, an outer and an inner. This early design has been a problem with early e9 automatics. Mine has been changed at least twice in 97K. This is the first time I am attempting to complete the change myself. The main issue I have is changing the small inner O-ring and whether the speedo gear needs to be removed as well as the bushing unit. Unfortunately the book does not go into much detail about the change. Hence the request for help from someone else who has done the change. Anyone?

The drive gear can come out with the housing. The large BMW oring is too thick and will tear, I had this issue with a 2002 auto. I am out of town but send me PM and I can give you the size. The small oring is most critical and a pain to remove but can be done. I think the whole housing is still available.

Found my post on the bmw2002faq:

Leave it to BMW to supersede an existing part with a later part. The o-ring in my son’s automatic speedo drive has been superseded to a current F series BMW. No big deal? The original part was 18mm x 2.2mm, the new part is 18mm x 2.4mm, I have now torn two trying to get the speedo drive back into the trans.

My solution:
