Does anybody have any experience of dipping and zinc coating they would like to share ? I have just purchased a partly restored CSL that I am thinking of taking to SPL ltd in The Uk anybody on this forum used them ? I'm hoping it's the best route for long term rustproofing or as near to it as possible

Mine was first dipped at SPL, metalwork completed, need to organise second dipping and ecoating.

Have seen alot of cars that have been ecoated, particularly classic Porsche, the company that restores them have always been very happy with the results.

Mine had severe corrosion in 2-3 seams that the initial dip did not remove, it was quite dense and compact, the process didn't manage to get to it. These seams were unpicked and corrosion removed manually. Otherwise very happy with process. Would recommend that you have plenty of drainage holes. As I recall (best to check), for the dipping the shell goes in normal orientation, fro the ecoating it goes in on its side, therefore, different drainage holes required.

I also knocked up a frame that connects to the rear beam to body points and bolts through the chassis legs under the front passenger compartment. Whilst they try to be careful it adds additional protection. It also has detachable legs with wheels that makes transport/movement easier.

If you do a search there are a few mentions of SPL on here.

Is the CSL a recent acquisition?

Hi Jp
Just put a picture up , yes a recent purchase think you may have taken a look when it was on eBay ? Or it may have been another forum member there was a previous thread a few weeks back.
I have tried searching spl can't seem to find much via the forum search

Yes, it was myself that went to look at it. Need to get the current project finished, so was not prepared to go too high on the bid. Also, if I came home with another I might be sleeping in the garage!

Will be interested in its progress. On the surface it looked reasonably well repaired, he had used a lot of BM panels. By the way, going to collect a dipped shell from SPL is nerve racking!

This thread has photos of a shell that has been dipped:

Ninemeister in Warrington (Porsche indy and bodyshop) have built quite a few cars from shells. They post lots of builds on Rennlist.com (search under 'ninemeister'), should be able to see ecoated shells.

For example

A couple of the cars they had done

Just something anecdotal:

the guy doing my car got a dipped Pantera to restore. Problem was that it was not properly done so after some time in the shop it started dripping when left over acid ate through the metal. It seems like dipping is great when done well but if it is not 110%.....

I have heard mixed reviews and stories similar to what happed to the Pantera. On balance and with the E coating process as well I think the positives out weigh the negatives. It will be going to SPL in November and I will post some photos

There is always ProStrip, they dip, neutralise and zinc prime.

Their spray system is designed to spray (where accessible) into box sections etc. I think they also use an endoscope to check these types of areas. Not able to ecoat whole cars but can have bodypanels ecoated.
