not sure if other have an issue w/ this but what a monster
the bolts that are used i think were either 15 or 17
but no way you can get a box wrench on them.
so i took the 17's and ground them down to
13mm top and bottom
---so much easier.
and i can use a 1/4" drive w/ universal to set them
then torque simply.

I noticed this too on my CSI. 17mm and almost no room to work. I could fit a box wrench but it quickly hits the lower intake runner on the djet manifold. I think a thin walled shallow socket would help.

When I attacked this job, I found an "obstruction wrench" really made the operation easy. In my case this was done on a carburetted '72. This tool is bent in an extreme fashion which allows a good grip on the starter bolts and is a big help here as access is so limited. Mike

Snap on makes a stubby thin walled universal that is perfect

Many people replace with a stud and a nut.

On the E24 this job is made easier using the thin 17mm wrench from the toolkit. Not sure about the E9 but it helped on the E3. Also E3 replaced with the smaller starter from an E34=sr441x which also fit my 635 and M6.
